At Prenton Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that:

  • Everyone is included…

  • Everyone is unique and different…

  • We celebrate our differences and what makes us who we are…

  • Equality is a priority…

  • There are NO outsiders!

We recognise that it is vital for all children to develop an understanding of the world around them, learning how to live alongside and show respect for a diverse range of people. We do not tolerate any form of discrimination, and we ensure our pupils demonstrate respect for those who share the protected characteristics. The Equality Act of 2010 protects everyone in Britain from discrimination, harassment, and victimisation, ensuring fairness and equal treatment for all.

Under the Equality Act, there are nine protected characteristics:

  • Age

  • Disability

  • Gender reassignment

  • Marriage and civil partnership

  • Pregnancy and maternity

  • Race

  • Religion or belief

  • Sex

  • Sexual orientation

We actively promote the Equality Act and the protected characteristics throughout our school by embedding them in various aspects of our daily life and curriculum. These are reflected in:

  • Our School Values

  • Our Curriculum Policy

  • My Happy Mind

  • School Behaviour Policy

  • Role modelling by all adults within the school community

  • Active engagement and communication with parents and carers

  • Assemblies

  • Workshops

Embedding the Protected Characteristics into the whole school ethos promotes:

  • Self-esteem, self-knowledge, and self-confidence

  • Respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic process

  • Acceptance of responsibility for their own behaviour

  • Respect for their own and other cultures

  • Understanding of how they can contribute positively to school and home life, and to the lives of those living and working in the locality and beyond

  • An understanding of Equality, Human Rights, and Protected Characteristics

  • An understanding of how citizens can influence decision-making through the democratic process

  • An appreciation that living under the rule of law protects individual citizens and is essential for their wellbeing and safety

  • An understanding that the freedom to choose and hold other faiths and beliefs is protected in law

  • Acceptance that others’ faiths, beliefs, or lack thereof, should be accepted and tolerated, without causing prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour

  • An understanding of the importance of identifying and combating discrimination

To assess the impact of our Equality Policy, we collect and analyse data across various areas, recorded on our Insight and CPOMS system. These include:

  • Admissions

  • Attendance

  • Exclusions

  • Outcomes
